I have another take. Seriously divergent.

There's "woke" and "awake". My read on the current usage is that "woke" refers to having a certain set of ideas popular in the culture. Not necessarily wholly, or widely popular. Popular with a segment of the population. This is based on social-political constructs favored by some. Seemingly, a rather vocal percentage. 

"Awake" doesn't have any sagaceous conceptual intellectual associations whatsoever. Simple being present in the moment. Eyes open, heart open. Seeing without adding anything. I believe that is closer to JC's message than what a vocal majority at any time in history advocates.
