I'm a 102-year-old doctor. Here are my 5L's for living a long, fulfilling life
"Life" .... from a 102-year-old doctor
The five Lโs that [Dr. Gladys] McGarey follows for a long and happy life are:
Life itself: โAs you pay attention to life itself, life is like a seed. It has a shell around it. It has all the energy of the universe within it,โ says McGarey. But life canโt change for the better without being activated by us first.
Love: โLove is the activating factor. It cracks the shell,โ she says. โItโs the whole aspect of life as we come into it and take our first breath.โ Love feeds into the remaining aspects of what makes life meaningful.
Laughter: โLaughter without love is cruel. Itโs mean [and] cold,โ McGarey says. โBut laughter with love is joy and happiness.โ
Labor: โLabor without love is drudgery. โI gotta go to workโ or โTheyโre too many diapers,โโ she says. โLabor with love is bliss. Itโs why a singer sings, why a painter paints, why I became a doctor. Itโs what juices you up. Itโs what makes you really know: โThis is who the inner core of me is.โโ Pay attention to what drives you, she adds.
Listening: โListening without love is empty sound,โ says McGarey. โBut listening with love is understanding.โ When youโre able to find people who understand you and what your purpose is, life becomes more fulfilling and you can go on to do the same for others.
But life isnโt always easy, McGarey points out. When youโre faced with tough times: โJust donโt get stuck. Or if you do [get stuck], start looking for the light. Itโs always there,โ she adds.
โYou just have to keep looking for it.โ
